Funkshen man, Dave Tully finally cracked competitive golf by winning the Wembley Pro-Am at Wembley Golf course, Perth.
For you golfers, Tully had a day out off the pro tees carding a tidy 2+ and 47pts stableford and winning the longest drive comp also. He can shape a mean lid too.

HB have produced a new look which is not only candy for the eye but also a welcome relief for the pocket and wildly functional beyond your comprehension.

The ICON series again features models from team stalwarts HUGHES & VIRTUE and combines deck contours, concaves, mesh, double & single stringers to form what will be the best boards of 08 - 09.

They are available now so start kicking up a stink at your local BB shop. WELCOME TO THE FREEDOM PROJEKT.

NB. Above was written by Marcus, a Hb man as you can see. We did have the pleasure of checking these fine sticks on despatch for the board test (which is currently underway) and their new look is like Sienna Miller with short hair (hot). Check out a shot of Pilot, Dougy Smith launching on the Hb Virtue in the next mag.

THE NO.6 BRETT YOUNG TRIALS TO INCLUDE TOP 16
13.5.08

The No. 6 Brett Young Trials
The gateway to the
Human Cronulla Shark Island Challenge
June 27th – 29th
Cronulla. NSW.

Tuesday 12th May 2008

Trials will be hotly contested…For the first time in the events history the Human Shark Island Challenge will feature all of the elite IBA Top 16.

In the past the waiting period has been a deterrent for International competitors but 2008 will herald a new formula and a shorter waiting period.

“ The waiting period has been trimmed down to just 20 days” said IBA International General Manager Terry McKenna.

“ This is less than half the time that the event has had in the past but we are confident that this time of the year will serve up some of the epic conditions that are required for what is considered to be the best competition on the planet”.

Local riders Dave Ballard and Christian Ricco have secured the local wildcards and will not have to contest the trials.

Sponsors wildcards include Big wave charger Chris James and Newcastle’s Garth McGregor.

Garth McGregor is enjoying a massive comeback to the sport after almost a decade away from the spotlight and is still regarded as one of the most powerful riders in the world. McGregor has had several front covers in 2008 and has also secured a new sponsor and his own model. In his own words he is “Stoked”

“I can’t wait mate. I have only surfed the Island a few times but I love the joint. So stoked that I am going to have a crack at the main event, it’s always been a dream” said an elated McGregor.

With the top 16 and the four wildcards straight into the main event ( July 1st – 20th ) the Number 6 trials are expected to be stacked with talent.

Riders from over 9 countries will be lining up against the best in Australia. An expected field of around 130 will contest the three-day event set down for June 27th – 29th at Cronulla Point.

TASSIE CREW GEAR UP FOR STATE TITLES
12.5.08

The 2008 Tasmanian Bodyboarding Titles have been locked in for the weekend of 17th – 18th of May and will be held either on the beaches of South Arm or the Tasman Peninsular. As well as competing for selection in Tasmanian team for Australasian Bodyboard Titles to be held in Port Macquarie during September the competitors will also be the running for prizes from Red Herring and Turbo Surf Designs. With a large range of divisions from Grommets (under 13s) to Masters (Over 35) this is one event not to be missed by any aspiring competitive rider.

IBA representative and new resident of the Apple Isle Karl Gol says he’s excited at the prospect of witnessing yet again some of Tasmania’s finest bodyboarders launching themselves at the infamous wedges found in Austrlalia’s most southern state. “Tasmanian riders have access to some of the most insane waves for bodyboarding, including Shipsterns Bluff, many other crazy reefs, points and beachbreaks and of course the punchy A-frames of spots like Rebounds. The standard of bodyboarding down here is now parallel to the mainland and I fully expect that the majority of competitors will be itching for the chance to bust some big, sick moves in order to crown themselves State Champions” Karl said.

Last year saw brothers Charles and Harley Ward take out the Junior and Cadet Divisions respectively and they’ll be hoping for a repeat performance this month to book themselves another shot at the Australasian Titles. Meanwhile last year’s youngest member of the state team Callum Wells will be hungry to mix it with his older rivals.

The contest will look to run in it’s entirety on the Saturday but may be postponed to Sunday should conditions be less than ideal. Entry fee is $40 not including membership to Surfing Tasmania which is compulsory for insurance purposes – see www.surfingtas.com.au to download the relevant form. Entry forms are available at Red Herring Surf Shops and www.ibaaustralasia.com Some beach entries may be taken by prior arrangement.

NO. 6 SPONSORS SHARK ISLAND CONTEST
5.5.08

The No.6 is proud to announce its launch in to the Australian market through its sponsorship of ‘The No.6 Brett Young Trials’ and becoming the official bodyboard of the ‘Cronulla Shark Island Challenge’.

The No.6 has been founded as an ‘anti’ statement by artisans in the sport of bodyboarding, a collective who believed the focus of progress in innovative riding and equipment had been lost. This led to the forming of The No.6, a company dedicated to the future development of high performance equipment.

The No.6 strives to meet the demands of core enthusiasts, to become the breeding ground for the progressive, the artistic, the anti-establishment, and the individuality that Bodyboarders have become renowned for.

Mark Dale, founder and head designer at The No.6 explains, “Our team has over 25 years in board manufacturing and foam development industries. This creates an inspirational environment for design, blending art and high concept with proven performance templates. That is The No.6.”

The No.6 set’s itself apart by releasing the latest 3D deck concepts, core developments, concave bottom technology, and all deck graphic capabilities.

Its focus on innovative riding and equipment makes The No.6 the perfect match for the Cronulla Shark Island Challenge, the proving ground for high performance bodyboarding in Australia.

THE NOMAD EFC CORE

Nomad Bodyboards is proud to announce the introduction of the new ‘Engineered Flex Core™’ to its 2008/2009 range.

In the past Bodyboard manufacturers have been forced to source existing materials manufactured by other industries for purposes other than bodyboard cores. This has forced the industry to be a slave to material manufacturers making materials of varying quality not purposely made for the quality of product they want produced. This is about to change.

Nomad is one of a few companies on the leading edge of a new core composition technology that will open the door to new world of 'ENGINEERED FLEX' conditions and purpose built Bodyboard materials.

In 2008, Nomad introduces ‘Engineered Flex Core™’, a breakthrough in Bodyboard core technology. The EFC is the first core material specifically developed and constructed as a core for bodyboards. The result is a durable, lightweight, one-piece core with superior memory, flex, recoil and projection properties.

The way in which the core is manufactured gives us the capability to engineer or finely tune a core precisely to the flexibility we want it to have. Each board’s core is individually manufactured inside a specially designed mold. This process allows us to introduce unique and varied stringer systems during the actual manufacturing process of the core, and assists us to effectively engineer the flex of the core to specific requirements, such as weight and height, but also surf conditions and water temperatures.

This differs from Polypro and PE cores that are manufactured in long sheets that must be then be cut to size. This process limits the manipulation of the cores flex properties to stringers that can be introduced after the manufacturing process by drilling holes into the core.

The EFC has allowed us to develop unique stringers that, if not for this breakthrough in manufacturing technology, could not be manufactured into the board in any other way. Instead, the EFC allows stringers to be encased inside the core during its manufacture.

This includes the Type A configuration, using Nomads variable flex stringer system that consists of a Centrifuge stringer that is a tabular [flat] fiberglass compound and nearly impossible to snap. Extra stiffness is added by adding a pair of semi-rigid tabular stabilizing stringers. This is the ultimate set-up for cool water surfing or any rider requiring superior flex.

The Type O configuration uses a traditional tubular Carbon Fiber Stringer encased in the core, allowing rigidity in cool water and providing Flex in warm water conditions.

Nomad will release the new Engineered Flex Core™ models, along with the entire 08/09 range, in June. Models to include the core are the Chris James EFC – Type A Crescent, The Glen Thurston EFC – Type A Crescent, the FSD Ultimate EFC – Type A, and the FSD Ultimate EFC – Type O. We look forward to introducing this amazing technology to Bodyboarders worldwide.

SCIENCE LIMITED EDITION RELEASE

Mike Stewart Science is proud to announce the release of the MS 1 LTD and the Thomas Robinson LTD.

Both of these boards feature a world first for the industry: The Compression Cell. The Compression Cells are soft impact absorbing cells held in a structural Polypropylene core matrix. The compression cells are placed under the elbows and in strategic areas of the board prone to impact.

The decks of all LTD boards feature a semi-transparent deck that reveals the Compression Cells configuration. The additional function of the cells is to provide greater traction on the deck without the necessity of wax. The slightly raised convex cells provide a subtle yet effective grip on the body.

Science Brand manager Chris Apps said “ We are extremely excited about the release of this innovation as it is a another first for the industry, and will give riders that extra cushion that is nice to have when landing big air moves”.

Both the MS1 and the TR model are each custom tuned specific to the size of the board. Elbow cups, hip grooves, and all deck contours are specifically placed to accommodate the size of the board being made. As the boards get longer, these
contours are moved to accommodate larger body measurements.

All Mike Stewart Science boards also feature RTI, Real Time Innovation. As boards are modified and improved in testing, we immediately implement proven changes into production models. This means that you are getting the latest improvements in our products, it is not necessary to wait until the new years models come out for the latest performance technology.

Mike Stewart Science is owned and operated by Mike Stewart. LTD models will be available in stores worldwide in 2008. For further information, contact JPI Pty Ltd on (07) 56658333.

PETE C. SETS HIMSELF STRAIGHT OVER THE GREAT WHITE CAMERA CONSPIRACY
2.5.08

It has come to my attention, don't know why i didn't see it yesterday, that the great white shark footage is from Rotto Box. When i saw the word 'Box' i immediately assumed the wave down at Margs. Is it possible to remove what was posted yesterday and/or write an apology on my behalf to Chris Gurney.

My sincerest apologies on the cock-up on my behalf

GURNEY SET STRAIGHT
1.5.08

I was browsing the Movement website today and it would seem as though Chris Gurney is having you on. The video footage of the Great White was from a baited underwater video camera that is used by the Department of Fisheries Wetern Australia to monitor fish populations. The camera was actually in water at the west end of Rottnest, no where near the Box. Pretty intimidating stuff all the same.

ROTTO BOX LOCALISM

Chris Gurney a WA photog sent us some shots recently a noah circling round the line-up at Rotto Box. It seemed like a one-off, but for some wild reason there is an underwater camera out there and it caught the above White Pointer cruising around the reef. He does look pretty chilled here, but you should see him when he's hungry.

Youse keen for a wave out there or what?
