Brendon Backshall
How do you rate the past year, in terms of career and riding?
I guess things have really started to take off for me career-wise. I signed a good deal for the next 12 months with my board sponsor, Manta, and I feel like since this time a year ago I have improved a lot in my riding but I’ve still got a lot of things I want to change/improve on, so hopefully by this time next year I can say I have really improved. Last year, when I got my first board model, I was still really young and I don't think I really deserved it and I felt a lot of pressure to perform and I just wanted to prove to myself I could go well. In 2009 I have some goals I really want to reach. So far I'm having the best year I’ve had and I just want to keep the momentum up and keep getting good shots, footage and hopefully even a few comp results.
You mentioned you might land a role in Mitch’s new flick, how did that come about?
I’ve been helping Mitch with a few things for his vid, mainly some shots he wanted to get and couldn't achieve without another ski. We’ve also been towing together and I was just psyched cruising and surfing with him because I was learning heaps and then one night he called asking if I would be interested in filming with him to get footage of myself to go into his movie. The amount of effort and time Mitch puts into his riding and this film he is making is amazing and he works harder than anyone in bodyboarding in my mind. I’ve learnt a lot from him.
You recently picked up a new sponsor in Booger King, is it true that to make the team you have to survive a weekend out with Toby Player?
Haha, I doubt I could handle a weekend out with Tobes! I'm a lightweight and barely drink so if that was the case I doubt I'd make it onto the team. I have only been on the team for a week and because I live so far away I'm not too sure of how Tobes approaches a team briefing but it would be a pretty casual affair I'm guessing. I'm looking forward to getting over east more and getting to hang with him and the other dudes.
You've also been travelling with your Zion sponsor, Ryan Mattick, is that part of plans for more vid production?
Ryan is a crazy dude with some crazy ideas and he is making another movie to further promote his wetsuit company and I have been trying to get onto a few sessions over east. He just came over hear to film too, so it should turn out well.
Finally, bodyboarding production is an evil process that contaminates the world with poisonous chemical by-products, what do you do to offset the harm caused by your own usage?
To be honest I haven't really put much thought into the whole bodyboard production/pollution subject and I guess that's pretty bad of me but I didn't actually think there is much I could do to make a difference in the production side of things. In general I never litter and never pollute, so I'm into keeping things natural - like a hippy but not quite, ha.
