Movement Mag

Issue 03

Flippin' the lid on old magazine law

Want to know why we throw the things we do into this new bodyboarding mag? the stirring options, the funny ways of living our lives, the loose vocabulary, the exclusive photoshoots, the cover concepts? it's because we're curious. your most nourishing days aren't forged working a job you hate, spewing out a product you'd rather see burn the take home, or marching the same strides as the dude in front of you to play it safe. it's when you let a little marrow drip from your lips, takin' some chances, that your worth the claret pumping through you veins. Why should a magazine be any different?

This issue we had Mike Stewart standing outside the Movement office billing posters of himself. His jacket was speckled with clumps of water and plain-white flour, but he didn't mind the mess, slapping the makeshift glue on the wall with a bucket, a broom and occasionally his paw in preparation for the images of his face in varying expressions. looking on were three Movement geese who hatched the poster concept.; Simon Ramsey, the man who interviewed Stewart. Photographer Mick Bruzesse, better known for his work with steamin' hot models; his assistant; and Doug Showell, Stewart's chauffer for his Australian stay. this is a man who has been in front of the lens for nearly three decades - once captured taken aim at the camera with his pipe and steam of piss. But never had he been so involved in the shot. "It's usually straight-up kinda stuff mags go for," said Mike. "But this was pretty fun, it was new for me." Fitting for   a man who opens up the tightest vault in bodyboarding with his interview this issue.

Just a week before the Stewart shoot our two hottest photographers were buy expanding their comfort zones with some fresh shooting techniques. Phil Gallagher executed an idea he'd have to shoot the Island Challenge from a chopper. "It was fucking nuts, we were cowboys of the sky, baby. Yee-haw!" bellowed Gallagher back on the ground. Meanwhile Tim Jones, who usually frothed over his fisheye angles, was boarding the back of a jetski to tried his hand at shooting some longer gear from a channel of a punchy reef break south of Sydney.

And then there's the cover this month, one of the greatest images of Stewart at pipe ever captured. We flipped this fucker because we thought it looked pretty cool as a backdoor cave. A chimerical version of how psycho a wave that big at Pipe's offsider would be. And for those who aren't that big on the right, check the original left stuck to the page opposite.

It's our magazine. It's your magazine. Rip in.
