Leif Emberg, Above Me

Photo: James Adams Rider: Leif Emberg Location: South of D'bah, QLD/NSW border. Date: 25-Jun-2009
The photographer says: “I got back from Japan last week. I was picked up from the airport at 6am by my brother, Pear, and Leif with a hunger for some little kegs. I was exhausted after a sleepless night flight full of Japanese people couching, sneezing and crying but I hadn't surfed in two weeks and longed for the ocean so we hit it. We found the banks surprisingly fun across the river from D’bah and had an unexpected five-hour surf. The wave featured in this shot was insane. It had been a while between sets and this was the first wave of the set. It drained off the sand bank like the ocean was sucking the beach dry. Leif scooped, set up and sat up. I had to swim under and when I came up all I could see was spit blasting out the other side of the jetty and Leif gliding out into the channel on the other side of the jetty. He said that it slabbed hard and he had to go mach 10 to even consider making it. After a brief shocky ride he started approaching the pillars. Having ridden a couple of fatter ones threw the danger zone, confidence was high so he decided to risk it and continue. The wave inhaled, semi-blinding him, before blowing its load midway through the metal tunnel of doom. By the time Leif's vision was cleared he was well and truly out of the barrel and a few metres past the jetty with his trademark bearded smile proudly spread across his mug.  Nice.”
