As a youngster this Movement staffer spent most Januarys on the North Shore of Hawaii. It was there, in a white house atop the hill of Waimea that I came to meet a British/ South African bodyboarder known as Shaggy. He was dating a girl staying at the Waimea house and came by with Maui Woowee occasionally. It was here that a decade long friendship started.
In all that time Shaggy has travelled the world, meeting many of you people out there in Balinese nightclubs, Cornwall cafes and South Coast line-ups. The man gets around. So it was Mexico that we found Shaggy this week, naked in a bin on Facebook, posted by close friend Luke Birch. We thought these antics of a travelling writer would be interesting so we hit Shaggy for some words. He thought he should do something instead of boozing and surfing all day and will be posting some hits right here.
Episode One.
Yeah Movement, this is the first of many happenings in Puerto Escondido. The hotel is pretty quiet tonight because 6 of the Newcastle boys have rented a car and driven three hours into the mountains to go and eat magic mushies and trip out for the night up there.
Brander and Coops are going out for "a" drink. Hopefully they will come home drunk with stories to tell or some for of alcohol related injury. Today was my first day of doing exercise in a few days. It's as small as Dee Why beach in the middle of Summer right now.
To start the day off was a stand up surf, then a 3km run, followed by 30mins boxing then for a couple hours of tennis in the afternoon, it must have been in the high 30's. It was 5-5 in the second set and a tie break was called due to the heat and we'd run out of water, Clive and I won for the record defeating Birch and Cooper 6-1 6-5.. To make it a whole hand of activities I did an hour and a half of yoga. Oh yeah and there was a group decision that Glen Thurston doesn't have the record for most lengths done at the hotel pool because he got rescued from the bottom of the pool by the owner of the hotel, Clive.
There isn't much news to report on, Monday night took it out of everyone, me including me. There'll be stories from two different groups.
SHAGGY

Your Name 19-Aug-2009 10:11 AM | Pakistan has powerful summer waves A group of four European surfers, 3 brits, Stuart Butler from Torbay, Cornish duo Ben Clift and Dan Haylock as well as Frenchman Antony Colas, have made a successful expedition in search of summer waves along the inhospitable coastal edge of Pakistan´s Makran Desert. The Europeans are believed to be the first British & French surfers to discover surfable waves at many different locations along that stretch of the Indian Ocean coastline. The group had waves everyday and usually not less than a 4ft swell. Some days the main beaches had good big waves and the swell was reported as more powerful than in France in summer. Sea breezes came up early in the day and blew many of the spots out. 23 virgin surf spots were discovered. Military restrictions, intense heat, large standstorms, blue-bottle jellyfish, were amongst natural hazards encountered combined with a general strike. The trip started from the coastal town of Gwadar, close to the Iranian border, and from there proceeded east to Karachi, crossing the inhospitable Makran Desert, one of Asia´s least-known regions. Rideable waves along the coast are caused by a "depression" that forms off the coast of Somalia from late May until late August producing a near constant southwest swell. A further detailed report will be filed soon. Press - Surfersvillage. |
Kuroshio Sea - 2nd largest aquarium tank in the world from Jon Rawlinson on Vimeo.
So what's the verdict people. Is this cool or uncool?Should a mass of sea life be confined to a tank like this? Is the conservation message that people seeing these natural wonders evokes, worth the caging of the select animals in this tank? Are fish and sea mammals devoid of the mind's eye hence making them relatively stupid and unaware of being in a tank anyway?| Posted by: razor 20-Jul-2009 11:05 AM | i reckon it's cool, the people that run these places love marine life more than us i'm sure. |
| Posted by: Chris 20-Jul-2009 12:00 PM | thats pretty unnatural, where's the fukin sea flora? doesn't even look like there is sand on the bottom. |
| Posted by: Troy Stedman 20-Jul-2009 02:45 PM | So wrong, our obsession with making a dollar out of the natural wonders surrounding us always ends up destroying it in the end. The Goldy is a prime example... |
| Posted by: 3. Your Name 23-Jul-2009 08:22 AM | Not cool. Go Scuba Diving if you want to see this stuff. |

| Posted by: M9 23-Jul-2009 06:33 PM | this is a JOKE why should the japs be allowed to slaughter whales, yet keep another 200 species of fish in captivity? bomb the japs - period |
| Posted by: Nicholas 21-Aug-2009 05:43 AM | I think that this is super rad. really allows us to appreciate the fishes of the sea, shows the majesty of them, |
