Thom & Dallas Grom Bash, The Aftermath

Posted Tuesday, August 18, 2009

Supported By: SWS, I Am None, Zion, Boom pod casts, Le Boogie, GU, Penguin Books and Movement Mag, Raising money for JAAGO.

Competitors for the Grom Bash were greeted to blue skies and clean 3ft peaks at Kiama Wedge on Saturday 15th August. With a years sponsorship on the line the competition was fierce. Early round stand outs were Taylor Brockman, Jacob Lee, Liam Tomkins and Shane Marsetti. The good conditions made for some great viewing.

Before the final a 30min Expression Session was held seeing Dallas Singer and Thomas Robinson going for it in the wedging conditions. Dallas blasting a big air reverse and Thomas back flipping off every wedge that came his way.

The waves continued to pump for the final and a traveling hump back whale even called in to check out some of the action. In the end 17year old Todd McCorie walked away with the year’s sponsorship, winning the final in the last minute with a big full rotation air reverse. 2nd place went to Taylor McAlary, 3rd Corey Daglish and 4th Connor Nelson.

Dallas commented “some of the surfing was phenomenal, the groms were tearing. Todd ripped all day so I think he will be a great new member to the team, I’m looking forward to surfing with him.” The event raised over one thousand dollars for the JAAGO charity organization.

JAAGO Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to the betterment of underprivileged and poverty-stricken children of Bangladesh. Founded in April 2007 in Dhaka by a group of young students, it focuses mainly on battling malnutrition and illiteracy in children and on rehabilitating them to better environments and social conditions. JAAGO is currently directed to conducting activities to provide more long-term and sustainable benefits to children who are under the poverty line. If you would like to donate to Jaago please do at www.jaago.com.bd A huge thanks needs to go out to all the event sponsors, riders and everyone that helped out on the day. -4Play. *All images by www.philgallagher.com

Bums On Towels, At IBA Viana Portugal

Posted Monday, August 17, 2009

Eder Luciano has today defeated GT in the final of the Viana Pro in Portugal. Tour leader going into the event, Mike Stewart placed equal third with Luis Villar, proving Mike can still challenge the best in gutless waves.

The real contest seems to have gone down on the beach though with 75% of the images sent to us from good man Pedro Patricio, featuring nylon sandwiched between two impeccable european buns.

Wow. People from Portugal are pretty touchy eh? relax guys, you should be mellow as with those fine women to enjoy!

i agree AJ. all the portuguese kids needa chill out and face the fact that they have never had a comp in waves over 3 foot and prob never will.which is an absolute disgrace to the progression of bodyboarding. the only reason the Portugal Pro is still on the tour is because it has financial backing, if only shark island, box and chopes was still on the tour.

crazzzzzy. is it any wonder why people laugh at bodyboarding still? kinda pathetic, really. i want to see the best in the world on the best waves in the world - schrapling waves to pieces, technically, precisely and with some fluidity. not this forced garbage. sigh.

there are some heavy insecurity issues going on in australia... Look aussies those events like the island we have been having those for years. Its called " nazare special edition". just google a bit and you will be surprised. Last one even had the biggest waves ever in a beachbreak (not joking). its no big deal so dont make it sound like youve landed on the moon.

19-Aug-2009 03:29 AM
The waves in the IBA Tour Australian leg were way better than those in Portugal. And of course, in Portugal you will never get waves bigger than 1 ft; don't even bother to come here.

relax mates. one thing it´s true, bad waves. so how´s the possible to get the best conditions to get the champ, months before? still period of week? were does the money come? in a sport that depends majoraty of natural conditions we should be more comprehensiv when this happen. be more friendly

19-Aug-2009 09:59 AM
Pork and cheese chicks are pretty average really... spot the one with the attractive face. Portugal has some amazing waves, and it is a real shame that this comp isn't held at one of those spots, during decent swell.

19-Aug-2009 01:11 PM
im aussie props to the portugese for doin it, comps cant always be in the best conditions at the best times. The pro surfers arent always surfin crackin waves in there comps either. Crew should support 100% thats the only way it will happen. Have seen nazare classic on the net fuckin huge

Hi guys! It's summer time here in Portugal, not the best season for a comp! But saying that Portugal dont have good waves it's complete ignorance! Props to all the crew involved in the Viana Pro, it's hard to do something in bodyboard nowadays, and the done it! And probably only beacause it's summer time and the sponsorships know there are a lot of people in the beach watching the contest. Let's work to do better contests and to improve bodyboard worldwide! Stop being such a fucking haters! We are bodyboard, a small but "core" sport, so stay united...we all one nation...the boogie nation

Bodyboarding was made for big sucky waves, this is i think where the sport thrives. Mike Stewart even said in the video that it is almost like a different sport (sufing small waves in those conditions). Bodyboarding competitions need big waves to maintain their credibility. If there is going to be more comps like this than big wave locations i am not going to be interested in following the comp scene. I would rather riders riding big waves for the love of it at their locals and getting a bit of mag coverage and the odd vid than seeing this great sport being prostituted like it is at these comps.
