In case you were born under a rock Kates and Thom have had their website live for, like, a week now. It’s more visual than literary and is an online display cabinet for their collective works. It will continue to be fed a steady stream of this content because, as Kates says, “I want to continually be making shit.” And that shit will, most often, be linked here first.

Movement: Firstly can you tell us the angle of this website, is it a personal blog for you two, are you looking to report on bodyboarding as a whole or your friends etc? 

Thomas Robinson: It’s basically just a white digital page that we can paint whatever we feel like whenever we feel like. I have had a blog for years and I just lost interest in it and wanted to do something a little more full on, a website felt natural. Originally we were just going to make clips and throw them round the internet but I figured it would be cool for there to be some kind of home for it all. It’s rad because we have so many talented mates scattered around the world who might be filming, taking photos or just scribbling in a notepad that are keen to contribute.

James Kates: I want to continually be making shit.

 

MM: Where does the name come from?

TR: I’m sure that anyone that’s created a company or in our case a website has beat their head against the wall about the name, we did just that for a few weeks. The name was inspired by the feeling you get when the waves are pumping down the coast and your leaving home at like 3.30am and getting home at say 9.30pm. Falling to sleep those nights and thinking back over the day is just puts me in a daze, its a really nice feeling.

JK: I blurted it out one day. I thought it sounded kind of lame and pretentious but it made sense so we went with it.

 

MM: What can we expect, content wise, from Highway Daze? 

TR: anything we think is rad really. Obviously a heap of boogen cause that’s what we both love but I wouldn't want to rule anything out, if we dig it and its done by us or one of our bros its up there.

JK: Chicks

 

MM: The beauty and the curse of websites is that demand constant attention, have you guys devised a cleaning list style roster for uploading days?

TR: not really just going to try and update it every second or third day, everyday is just unrealistic and I'd rather try and go for quality rather than quantity.

JK: Not really. We've got a bunch of vids and pics banking up so there's no real stress for now.

 

MM: Will there be a clear separation of roles within the site, Kates doing vid and Thom on shots?

TR: not really, Kates will be cutting most of the films, I love the way he puts stuff together and I don’t have a clue how to use that program yet.

JK: I guess I'll be chopping clips and contribute the odd photo. 

 

MM: Will there be any corporate involvement on this site, or in other words is it a vehicle to promote yourselves and your sponsors as well?

TR: we wont be jamming anything down your throat but I guess in a way it will be promoting something. 

JK: It was always an incentive to do the site but not the reason behind it. 

 

MM: What do you hope for the site to become in a year or two years?

TR: I haven’t really thought about it so much like that, even if it just lasted a year and we decided to pull the pin that’s cool. I just want to do something productive and enjoyable.

JK: Possibly extinct but something cool to look back on. Time will tell.

What started as a man’s sneaker obsession has become a resource for life. JTL is the man with 90 pairs of sneakers (aka a season’s worth of sneakers) and the devotion to document them. When his friends began optioning to ask JTL a question through the site, however, it mutated into a whole new beast. Jason Bitzer is an American bodyboarder and administrator who has been around the scene since the early 90s. Apart from the occasional sticker pack and complementary tee, our media perks are kind of far and few between. Basically this is for our older viewers, 25 plus kind of guys. Still riding on the weekend but buckling down into a trader/ real estate/ marketing manager and these days perhaps a professional bodyboarder type role. Kind of man whose iPhone bluetooth links straight into his car when he enters so he can call his PA for the lunch appointment. Kind of man who calls girls, ladies. Kind of man who shines under pressure, perhaps in a old persons nursing home fire. OK that's extreme but it could happen - and if it did - you'd want a fast, safe Volvo to launch through the flames where you could hustle the oldies onto the leather seats and to safety.

The art of making beer is about to take on a whole new meaning in a one of a kind exhibition, the Keg Show at aMBUSH Gallery on July 1. Byron Bay’s Stone and Wood collaborated with 12 of Australia’s leading artists to create three-dimensional works of art on kegs instead of canvases, resulting in pieces that highlight the opportunities for unusual innovation within the visual world. The artists will be painting a keg each, which will then be sold to benefit the charity of the artist’s choice.

 

The nominated artists have been selected from a wide range of backgrounds and individual styles, including Beci Orpin, Ben Brown, Catherine Campbell, Beastman, Numskull, Sara Hingle, Claudio Kirac, Nick Chalmers, Milly Loveknuckles, Terezka Beck, Amber B and Phibs.

 

As one of the owners of Stone & Wood, Ross Jurisich, explains, “There’s definitely an art to making great beer, but seeing what these artists have done with our kegs is just amazing. We’re really happy to be working with such a talented bunch of people and excited about helping a bunch of different charities at the same time.”
