Wolfmother Awakens

Posted Monday, August 31, 2009

A couple of years back now, Wolfmother played our local pub. The roof was low, their set was new and frontman Stockdale wailed that place down in a haze of beer and sweat. From there Wolfmother went onto become a huge global act, play to thousands of devil-horned-fisted people, tour the world and like any good band, break up.

Stockdale went home to Brisbane with no band members and some weird vibes. Keen to record some new music, he hit a friend from Brisbane, Dave Atkins (Resin Dogs drummer) to come over and help him lay some tracks he'd been writing. Before long they'd dropped some new tracks and Stockdale asked Dave if he had any buddies who could play some parts on base and organ.

Dave suggests Ian Peres, a man with similar hair volume and the sweet ability to play the mediums required. Before long they realised they would need another guitar man, so a mate who'd always called Stockdale keen to play (Aidan Nemeth), was in the band. It may not have been the JD Fortune, INXS style re-group of a hundred rehearsed men with bad forearm tatts, but thank fuck it wasn't. Stockdale had a cosmic egg on his hands and that thing was ready to explode into a second album.

This clip was recorded near completion of the album at Rocking Horse Studios in Byron Bay.

Hubb Defeats Hardy in Final Of IBA Sintra Grand Slam

Posted Monday, August 31, 2009

Hubbs and Catarina take Sintra…

After 6 days of non-stop action it had come down to this…

The weather was perfect and the waves cleaned up in time for the final day of the 2009 Sintra Portugal Pro. The day began with the men’s quarterfinals in well-shaped glassy waves.  The heats were as follows:

Eder Luciano(Brazil) vs Amaury Laverne(Reunion)

Jeff Hubbard (Hawaii) vs Pierre Louis Costes (France)

Hugo Pinherro(Portugal) vs Ryan Hardy (Australia)

Mark McCarthy (South Africa) vs Ben Player (Australia)

A mammoth highlight was Ben Player’s perfect 10 with a backflip and roll.  It was the only 10 for the prone riders and showed that he is still a force to be reckoned with on the IBA Tour.

The semi’s showcased the best bodyboarding of the event as the waves were pumping during this part of the day with clean tubing ramps all over the shop.

It looked like this…

Eder Luciano vs Jeff Hubbard

Ben Player vs Ryan Hardy

Highlights from the Semi’s were Ryan Hardy’s 9.25 which began with a back flip out of the bowl, then an ARS and completed with a roll on the inside section.  At this point Hardy was behind and BP looked like he was on-song for a final. Ben held his fist in the air and claimed the score for his good mate that he grew up surfing against as a junior.

DK king, Dave Hubb, was the clear leader for the dropknee from the outset in the first final on the DKWT.  The four man final saw a lot of jostling for 2nd and 3rd between Dave Winchester and Ardiel Jimenez.  The conditions were difficult for the final as the waves failed to produce clean lines that allowed for multiple moves.  The final results for the drop knee were:

1. Dave Hubbard (Hawaii), 2. Ardiel Jimenez (Canaries),           3. Dave Winchester (Australia), 4. Nuno Leitao (Portugal).

The women’s final saw the beach packed and cheering for the Portuguese final.  Pandemonium hit as the electricity went out for the second half of the final; the only sounds being the cheers of the crowd encouraging the girls to take advantage of the much cleaner conditions than previous days.  Catarina Sousa carried away the women’s novelty cheque with a combination of good waves, scoring a 7.0 for a great roll.  Rita Pires failed to find winning waves that would allow for high scores.

The men’s final saw Jeff Hubbard leading early. This theme continued throughout the heat as Ryan Hardy failed to find any waves that were worth more than a take-off.  Hubb completed a few good combination moves and successfully managed to pick off every decent wave that came through.

This final has ensured the title race for this years IBA World title pursuit will be even closer.  Hardy and Hubb have each won a grand slam event for the year, and with Mike Stewart and Tamega both bowing out earlier in the competition, it has ensured that the tense race to the finish line has become tighter.

Its all going to come down to the wire at the final Grand Slam event of the year at Confital in the Canary Islands.

In the meantime there are 2 events left on the E5’09 leg here in Europe with everyone heading North towards Ferrol for the Deeply Pro before returning back to Peniche’ for the Peniche’ Pro.

Still lots of action coming your way so stay tuned to www.ibaworldtour.com for all the info…

Grand Slam IBA Sintra Portugal, Man-on-man Live Tonight (Australia)

Posted Saturday, August 29, 2009

The 2009 Sintra Portugal Pro

Pria Grande’

Sintra. Portugal.

August 25th – 30th

Day 4 Sintra. The Big guns fire…

A cool change greeted competitors for day 4 at Pria Grande’ and the day started as nippy and overcast but things soon heated up when the IBA Top 16 hit the water.

R7 is always a highlight when you get the top seeds taking on the inform qualifiers in the “money round” & you could almost feel the tension in the air as the first heat started and the front runners in the 2009 IBA World Title race started their campaign.

Heat 1 and Brazilian Eder Luciano and Australia’s Michael Novy dominate the line-up with superior positioning and solid moves to leave Oliver Herrera (Canary Isle) and Guilherme Tamega (Brazil) in their wake. Tamega looked he waited for a wave that never came and the current ratings leader was gone in the blink of an eye. If that can happen to GT, then everyone was on notice from the get go.

Heat 2 was a see-sawing affair that saw Amaury Laverhne (Re-Union) take control at the halfway mark and never looked like failing. That left the other three guys to battle for second and in the end Mitch Rawlins (Aust) held off Dave Hubbard (Hawaii) and Magno Oliveira (Brazil).

Jeff Hubbard (Hawaii) continued his great form with a win in the 3rd. Brazilian Paulo Barcellos scored the wave he needed in the dying seconds to finish second ahead of Gilhermo Cobo (Spain) and Andre Botha (Sth Africa).

The 4th heat was a tough one as the ocean started to change and the good waves were harder to find. Pierre Luis Costes (France) made the most of the conditions and moved through with Portugals Manuel Centeno. Exit Benat Elosua (Spain) and Airam Cabrera (Canary Isle)

Former World champion Damian King (Australia) and Goncarlo Silva (Portugal) were beaten by Hugo Pinheiro (Portugal) and current World Champion Uri Valadao (Brazil) in the 5th. By this time the cross-shore winds were leaving some surface scarring and creating some ribs in the wave face and the bigger scores were tough to nail.

In the 6th heat it was all eyes on Ryan Hardy (Australia), as he is one of the potential title contenders, and he seized the moment by both hands to secure a win ahead of Aritz Larinaga (Basque Country) with Pablo Prieto (Germany) and Luis Villar ( Brazil) disposed of in 3rd & 4th.

Heat 7 was the most high power heat of the day and the water was almost bubbling with adrenalin. Mike Stewart (Hawaii) had been watching as GT, Uri and Hardy jumped the hurdles but his job was made harder when Ben Player (Australia) and Diego Cabrera (Canary Isle) flipped and twisted their way into first and second with Mike in third and Brazil’s Lucas Nogueira forth.

“That was tough out there” said Mike.

“When I turned up and saw that GT had been beaten I thought that conditions must be tricky and they were”

“ The vibe in the line-up was pretty gnarly and I guess it will come down to Confital, depending on the results here” said the 9 time World Champion.

The last heat of the round saw two of the new crew dominated with Australia’s Dave Winchester and South African Mark McCarthy goin1,2. Brad Hughes (Australia) fell one place short and joined Alex Uranga (Spain) on the sidelines.

When the dust settled 4 of the top 6 kept their hopes alive for scoring the “Double-points” up for grabs at this IBA Grand Slam.

Tomorrow the event goes Man-on-man and the heats are as follows

H1            Eder Luciano V Mitch Rawlins

H2            Amaury Laverhne V Michael Novy

H3             Jeff Hubbard V Manuel Centeno

H4            Pierre Luis Costes V Paulo Barcellos

H5            Hugo Pinheiro V Aritz Larrinaga

H6            Ryan Hardy V Uri Valadao

H7            Diego Cabrera V Mark McCarthy

H8             Dave Winchester V Ben Player

The quarterfinals of the WWT also served up some epic clashes and some interesting upsets in an ocean that was rising and becoming unpredictable.

Heat 1 saw Portugal’s Rita Pires and the current World Champion Neymara Carvalho (Brazil) sift through the trash to find some gold but in the end Pires was victorious.

Heat 2 and Brazilians Isabella Sousa and Jessica Becker were tossed about in the unforgiving seas. Isabella was washed way down the beach and spent a good 10 minutes paddling back into position. In the end she needed a 2.5 but just could not get out there to find it.

The 3rd quarter featured Spanish ratings leader Eunate Aguirre and Portugals Catarina Sousa. Maybe the pressure of seeing Neymara eliminated played on the mind of Eunate as she struggled, while Catarina  looked solid and moved into the semi’s.

Eunate and Neymara will finish with equal points and the World Title race for Women will remain wide open until the final Grand Slam at Confital.

The last heat of the day saw Portugals Marta Fernandez eliminate Puerto Rican Luz Marie Grand Perez in an ocean that had taken on a “Washing machine” like appearance.

Best score of the day went to Diego Cabrera who netted a 9.25 average for a crazy ARS.  Diego had been battling a back injury from the earlier rounds but he showed no fear and there was no sign of that during this moment.

The 2009 Sintra Portugal Pro enters its final two days on the weekend and tomorrow will start with the R8 man on man heats followed by the Womens and then the DK semi’s.

Tune in live at www.portugalbodyboard.com or www.ibaworldtour.com/live for all the action from 9am local time.

pfft, that av wave is for shit. it's too shallow at the start to get a proper barrel, shacks up for just a little longer than michael jackson's comeback tour lasted and then goes fatter than danny devito. over before it starts, just like MJ and yet frothers from all over claim how good it is even more than the kooks at tama who reckon their reef is any good. yew? good on ya.

IBA World Tour Update

Posted Wednesday, August 26, 2009

If you've been following the IBA Tour on it's E5 leg through Europe you'll be interested to know that Amaury Lavernhe has won the Sopelana event in Spain.

Running at present is the Sintra Portugal event which is getting some nice three foot waves - you can watch the live broadcast here.

Also, the IBA has a little update from day one here.

Below, details from Spain.

Amaury Laverhne (Re-Union) has once again captured the hearts of the people of the Basque country with a win in the 2009 Sopelana BBK Pro.

He defeated Jeff Hubbard (Hawaii) in the final with locals Antonio Ortiz and Alex Uranga finishing equal third.

The surf was clean at 2-3 feet with some slabing shore-breaks that allowed for extreme moves in front of a massive crowd that waded into knee deep water to see the action.

Overall contest enjoyed great waves and weather and was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Gonzaga Prado and his hard working team at the EBE and we look forward to a bigger and better event in 2010.

"The Dream Is Right Now And We're Living It"

We stumbled across some extreme kayaker guys that really know how to talk it up, like the Saffa that gives the opening line:

"Tha people thad have the mined set to go out and explore and discover new continents and countries, thad's us."

To be fair, it is nuts what these guys do and it must be a kick to slide between those massive canyons in that little plastic capsule. It's just the Red Bull logo, orchestral violin soundtrack and dude with the name 'Rush' that makes it all feel a little too familiar. Enjoy.

Dear Redbull. I am the Director of the Extreme Fart Challenge. As the name suggests, we take our farts to the max! We go to far off exotic locations to fart and get ourselves into extreme farting situations. Could you please sponsor us? You seem to sponsor all other lame and useless extreme sports so we'd be perfect for you. thanks

Brendan, you only need to look at where most of the world tour contests are held to see why some companies view bodyboarding as kids splashing around in the shorebreak doing floppos and belly spinners to shore.

Ben Player's Seven Hour Section

Posted Tuesday, August 25, 2009

People will often quip about the fact a dvd section or youtube clip can be made up of many sessions and that anyone with a camera trained on them every surf over an extended period of time can create good results. Kind of true, kind of not true. Definitely more impressive when you nail a section in a day though, fueled on coffee and iPod playlists like Ben Player has done below.
